The Cold War: Close, dangerously too close

M.I.C.E
Money, Ideology, Compromise, Ego

These are the foundations of spies and have been the standard throughout history. If you want to recruit someone to commit a nefarious act then your best is to apply pressure to one of the traits listed above. If you are looking for a high success rate without much fuss or effort, focus on the first letter. That one almost never fails. You might even be shocked by just how many and who is willing to betray their country, divulge secrets, and commit treason all in the name of the all-mighty dollar. I think it is fair to say that Agent Jack Bauer and 007 James Bond fall under "I". Well, maybe 007 drifts a bit to the "E" aswell.

The world of spies is a highly stressful one but you better learn to keep your cool under pressure otherwise it could be you that feels the pressure of a cold steel barrel pressed to the back of your head. Hell, maybe you get lucky and they just slap the cuffs on you. Maybe you get a show trial and get off light with say 20 years in a maximum security prison or maybe you get it heavy and are in solitary confinement for life. Hey, it could be worse; you could have a poison tip umbrella filled with a small amount of ricin jabbed in your leg. "Oops, sorry about that ol'chap didn't mean to poke you there." Ask a bloke for a light and that first spark lets off cyanide gas in your face. Ricin or cyanide, either way you will be dead in a few minutes. How about a cup of afternoon tea, would you like a very tiny amount of radioactive Polonium-210 added to it? It goes down well with your brain functions, heart, and internal organs. You will be dead in a week. Feel like taking a phone call from a loved one? Feel like having your cell signal transmitted to a satellite that triggers an explosive in the phone you are using? I don't think so. Maybe you are the cautions type and well aware you might have crosshairs on you wherever you go. So, you beef up with a bodyguard team and feel secure. Your Mercedes Benz is armored but that indiscriminate parked truck packed with TNT doesn't seem too phased by it and neither does the suicide bomber with the itchy trigger finger. He counts down waiting for that armored card to line up right beside him and that red traffic light just ahead makes his job even easier. You will be cleaned up with a sponge along with 21 others and 225 pedestrians make it out alive but are scarred for life. Everything I just told you is absolutely true and happened. It is an unfortunate part of espionage work but it only one facet of it.

While death or imprisonment is a very realistic possibility for spies many of them manage to continue their work for a long period of time before being caught. The CIA and FBI had a few spies working for the KGB that for over 20 years were selling US intelligence secrets. Many of them did it willingly for money. Some were in debt while others were just plain greedy. There are those that were idealists and believed in either the Soviet or American way of life. Same went for those that spied in World War II who had either allied or Nazi sympathies. These spies typically didn't have the highest rank in their own countries intelligence or military departments. They were often low ranking grunts that simply had access to highly sensitive information. Edward Snowden is a perfect example. He falls under the "I" category. He believes exposing US surveillance secrets on everyday citizens was a necessary step to prevent further wrongdoings.

Once you are ready to betray your country you can go about it the old fashion way by simply walking up to another countries embassy and say you want to speak to someone "high up" because you got something "juicy" to offer. Believe it or not that has worked in the past. Or other countries have their own recruiters who simply cozy up to you and perhaps after a martini or two or maybe after a roll in the hay you start spilling secrets. Now, either you keep spilling secrets or they expose you to your countries authorities. Oh and forget about that fat pay day, we got you under "C" now. Good old compromise. Now once that femme fatale (and yes, they were used for this very purpose) you usually get passed off to a more ugly looking fellow who becomes your handler. You might meet him once or you might him several times and he ends up becoming one of your best mates (it happens). If you meet him once he will set-up a "dead drop" with you. Your communication with him will probably be at random to avoid detection by counterintelligence trying to catch you. When your handler makes contact it will likely be in a coded form. A cipher which is a numerical code that translates into an alphabetical text is quite popular and can be quite difficult to crack if done well. Once you translate the cipher it will tell you where to take your stolen intelligence information and at what time. The details are likely to be highly specific to avoid the "good guys" from catching you. A dead drop is a "safe" location that has an object disguised as an everyday item which has a built-in container to place your stolen information. A seemingly innocent rock with a base cover removal, a small hole in the sidewalk but with a tube container attached at the bottom just waiting for some government secrets. How about a dead rat, yeah a dead rat with its guts torn out and a zipper attached; just unzip and place your information in.

Now, remember the good guys are watching or at least trying to watch or hear. They got bugs everywhere and literally it could be a bug or small animal. Trained animals with either audio or video surveillance attached to them. Who is going to suspect a cute little kitty? especially one with a surgically implanted microphone or antenna.

On the one hand it is easy to say that spies can benefit one country and severely damage another countries intelligence effort. This is very true but only the flip side I thought to myself what if spies were not in place at all and nobody knew what their "enemies" were up too? Would that make things more dangerous? Your enemy knows that you have no clue as to what they are planning so what is to stop them from launching a full scale attack? You would be totally be caught off guard and likely defeated. But if you have spies in place it is kind of like a heads-up that shit could hit the fan. You enemy is kind of forced to come clean and balk at their opportunity for an assault. To me, that is why are spies are in place, to keep the other guy honest. It is just an unfortunate bugaboo when one of those spies happens to be one of your own citizens in search of a big pay day, has a change of heart, caught in compromising photographs, or someone has stroked their ego telling them they are a big shot and are being treated unfairly, hey it happens and if it happens to you just be sure to watch your back because someone is always watching you. Just hope they don't have an itchy trigger finger or a cup of tea....

EVE Online- A distant future where some things never change

EVE Online, where do I start with this one? I wrote a blurb about EVE Online in a previous post where I was discussing my enjoyment for Strike Suit Zero and the YouTube channel of Scott Manley on which I was watching it. Unfortunately a blurb cannot possibly do EVE Online justice. Even the book I am reviewing cannot possibly do EVE Online proper justice. The book, “EVE Source” by Dark Horse Comics does a great job of simply giving an overview, landscape, and brief history of the events and major players of New Eden. If one were to give a truly detailed account of New Eden it would have to be done in volumes.

I am going to do my very best to keep this blog post short. I know I have written some epics in the past but quite frankly if I do take that route with EVE Source I will be writing until I have blisters and I have no interest in that at all. EVE Online is a multiplayer sandbox video game where users must create an account and also pay to play. I believe the cost is around $100.00. I think it would be fair to say that EVE Online is the outer space version of World of Warcraft. Now, if you were to say that to an EVE Online player or a World of Warcraft player (my ex was a big time WOW player and she did not like when I made jokes about it) they might get insulted and go into length about how the games were different but for the general populace I think the comparison is a fair one. EVE has gained popularity for its massive scope and areas such as being part of raids for supplies and even collecting on bounties. It really acts as its own separate mini-universe although that universe is nearly endless in size and scope if you play.

The game has featured some of the most legendary online battles in the history of the internet. There have been hundreds of players engaging their fleets in battles featuring hundreds of thousands of ships. EVE Online has also been praised for some of the most brilliant and spectacular visual graphics in video game history. There is no denying marveling at the sight of gameplay is truly a work of art that if I could would happily hang it in my apartment.

The critics of EVE Online have highlighted the fact that the game is very difficult for new players. Yes, this can certainly be true since EVE relies on hard physics and piloting skills in actual outer space environments. If you don’t have much background, knowledge, or interest in legitimate space flight then EVE Online would not really be the game for you. Critics have also stated that there is no real learning curve and support. Apparently there was a tutorial in the game but it was taken down. My guess is that it was brought back up. I would not know for certain as I don’t play EVE Online or any games really. I am simply in it for the story factor but I would imagine that these critics are correct.

To sum things up for the general populace EVE Online takes place in a star cluster of the universe which is called New Eden. The story goes as such; just over 16,000 years ago Earth had expanded so much through its solar system and other local stars that resources were becoming scarce. A wormhole was discovered in which several ships from different part of human species ventured. Not everyone made it through and the wormhole collapsed, those that were on the other side of the wormhole had to survive and fend for themselves. These were dark times but eventually governments were established and empires were born. These empires controlled several star systems and on many occasions went to war. Eventually CONCORD (think the United Nations) was established to oversee things and ensure fair play or at least something close to it was part of the plan.

The main empires of focus were the Amarr who reminded me of the Roman Catholic Church or the southern United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Amarr were big advocates of slave labour and human trafficking. The Minmatar Republic who were the freed slaves of the Amarr who rose up against their masters and established their own home world and republic, the way they are described reminds of poor African nations just trying to get some respect and a foothold in New Eden. The Gallente Federation who I guess could be described as one giant New York City with a very pro left wing lifestyle. Basically anything goes in the Gallente Federation be it any of vice of ones choosing. The Caldari State who I would say is essentially corporate America run amok. It is a place where consumerism is everything and the people pledge allegiance to corporations. Then they are the Jove, a mysterious group of people who have vastly superior technology and weaponry. They keep to themselves and nobody has heard from them in a while. I know it may sound strange but they remind of what North Korea wishes it was in the minds of others, enviable, superior, and a mysterious awe.

The descriptions of the empires and other major players like the criminal organization known as the Angel Cartel or the terrifying megalomaniac Sansha seem to be literally ripped from our own world history. The descriptions I gave of the empires are pretty spot on. It is not plagiarism or anything of that nature but I have to deduct points for creativity. Reading this I often felt I knew these empires and environments already. I learned all about them in school and on the history channel. As for the crazy dictator Sansha, well he sounds an awful like Darkseid from DC Comics to me.

Don’t get me wrong. I think EVE Online is awesome and some really cutting edge stuff in terms of visuals and gameplay but after learning the history of characters involved it was all rather familiar. The star cluster of New Eden is massive in scope and scale. We are talking literally trillions of human beings and the thoughts of planet Earth have pretty much become myth since that wormhole closed some 16,000 years ago. Part of me wonders with that many people how would any of these empires possibly enforce their rule of law. It just seems like too much control. No level of government or even military could possibly oversee and police that many. To me it just be too much to handle and these empires should collapse and form smaller or manageable groups of people but what do I know? I do know this, if you are looking for something different check out EVE online but don’t worry, it is not too different in fact it is much more recognizable than you might think.

While venturing through Indigo I spotted a book called Halo Encyclopedia: The definitive guide to the Halo Universe. I decided to purchase it and learn about the Halo Universe the same way I learned about the universes of Star Wars and Game of Thrones. Like those books this one on the Halo series was encyclopedic in nature and explained the bare bones and basic facts plus as always with these types of books it features some really great artwork. I got to reading it right away and I was not disappointed in the slightest. I learned all about the Halo universe and how in the distant future mankind has expanded to explore, conquer, and colonise other star systems. I also learned how all that became very close to falling apart.

As any gamer knows and I am sure any general person knows the Halo video game series is one of the most popular and best-selling video games in history. It has spawned toys, novels, great artwork, and a Japanese anime. Microsoft and one of its prize babies the Xbox created what has really become more than just a video game. It is an awe-inspiring, compelling, comprehensive, and overall epic story about mankind defending its species and engaging in a massive space war with a gargantuan religious based and backed alien union called The Covenant. The ramifications of this war end up answering many questions and creating even more questions with regards to the history and origins of mankind. At the forefront of man’s war against The Covenant is the United Nations Space Command aka the UNSC. The best trained and most elite soldiers are the Spartans and there is no greater and heroic Spartan than the Master Chief John-117. He is the hero and saviour of mankind and leads the charge on the most dangerous of missions. His adventures and prowess have made him an almost mythical figure among humans and to The Covenant he is simply referred to as The Demon

For the most part I knew next to nothing about the Halo series. It looked cool no denying that. I am instantly drawn to any sort of Space and science fiction subject and space military stories always put a smile on my face. There is no denying that Master Chief Spartan John-117 has perhaps the coolest looking battle armour of any character created in the history of science fiction. Jango Fett from Star War is a very close second and I could give him the nod because he has a jet pack and I love jet packs! But, as I continued reading I realized that the Master Chief could easily have a jet pack attached to his MJOLNIR exoskeleton battle suit. (MJOLNIR by the way is the hammer of Thor from Norse mythology). Despite these alluring features of the series I avoided Halo mainly because I didn’t have an Xbox (still don’t) and I am not very good at video games but as time progressed video games are now more than just games. They are great stories that I enjoy watching like a movie and there is not greater place to check that out than on YouTube. I found a channel called TheRadBrad and all this guy does is play video games and much to my enjoyment he had Halo 4 on his channel. I watched the whole thing and I must say it was one great adventurous ride. One of the great things about the Halo series is that it appeals to such a wide audience. It is not overly graphic and violent while at the same time it is not overly childish. Adults and kids can enjoy it equally. The adventures of Master Chief Spartan John-117 can easily appeal to anyone and they certainly appealed to me.

Master Chief Spartan John-117 like other Spartan super soldiers was plucked from early childhood to begin his training. And no, he didn’t have a choice. UNSC doctor Catherine Halsey selected him along with the others based on their genetic make-up, levels of intelligence, and displays of physical activity. Basically the best and brightest were being spied on by the government and kidnapped to be part of a super-secret government program to create super soldiers. Think Ender’s Game if you have read that novel. Once in the care of Dr. Halsey these children were put through a battery of tests and weeded out to make sure that only the best of the best was still standing. John-117 made the cut and became the favourite of Dr. Halsey but she was careful not to show any favouritism to any of the Spartans. She cared for them as her own but mankind was at war and they were trained to kill the enemy and defend mankind. Coddling was not tolerated and probably explains why John-117 is a no-nonsense professional soldier with the personality of Clint Eastwood in an old west movie. Funny enough the voice actor of John-117 patterned his personality on Clint Eastwood. In the battlefield if a Spartan dies they are never listed as KIA (Killed in Action). They are always listed as MIA (Missing in Action). This was done to provide mankind hope that our best soldiers could not be stopped and no matter what would rise again.

When Master Chief Spartan John-117 was put into operation he was given an Artificial Intelligence that was wired into his battle suit. This AI construct was named Cortana and became the Master Chief’s closest friend and ally. Although Cortana was not actually human, advancements in computing allowed AI’s to develop their own personality and appearance. Cortana was technically Master Chiefs superior officer and gave him orders but she was also in many ways his best friend and very protective of him. Unfortunately all  AI’s  suffer from a dangerous problem called Rampancy which basically means they have consumed too much knowledge and cannot sort it out thus they end up going “insane”. This is a problem that has yet to be solved in the distant future and no matter how advanced an AI is it seems to die of this disease after a seven year lifespan.

The Covenant is the main protagonist in the Halo series. As mentioned earlier they are an Alien Union of planets that are in a continuous search for Forerunner artifacts. The Covenant use Forerunner technology and weaponry to expand their empire and unfortunately for Earth their arsenal is vastly superior to our best defenses and weapons. The Forerunners are the creators of the Halo installations which are scattered at certain points in the Orion’s Arm of the Milky Way. They have different types of atmospheres but are empty and only the remaining Forerunner technology still exists there, where exactly the Forerunners have gone is a mystery to both The Covenant and Mankind but one thing is for certain they are no longer in the Orion’s Arm section of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Covenant worship the Halo installations but when they along with Master Chief Spartan John-117, his AI Cortana, tough as nails and hardnosed Sargent Major Avery Johnson, Captain Jacob Keyes and his daughter Commander Miranda Keyes crash on Halo Installation 04 they find out the Halo’s are not exactly a religious paradise and/or gateway to the promise land.

The Covenant begin pillaging the installation in hopes of finding more Forerunner artifacts and technology but in doing so they enter a highly secured quarantine zone and unwittingly release an ancient parasitic disease called The Flood. Each Halo installation is operated and protected by an AI monitor and the protector of Installation 04 is an AI construct called 343 Guilty Spark. The Flood was a devastating parasite and the Forerunners built the Halos not as safe havens but as “bombs”. The Flood feeds off all sentient life and it is controlled by a hive brain called the Gravemind. Once you are infected there is no way out. The Forerunners, the most advanced species known were virtually helpless at finding a cure to stop it. Their only hope at slowing it down was a mega mass suicide to kill all sentient life thus starving The Flood to death and preventing its spread. 343 Guilty Spark does not reveal this information to Master Chief but instead informs him that activating the Halo will stop The Flood. The whole part about killing every sentient life form within a few light years is conveniently left out of the conversation. Cortana finds out about this and prevents it from happening thus saving billions of lives but saving those lives was really only a band aid solution because even though the installation was destroyed without detonating the “bomb” The Flood parasite escapes. Mankind must now not only battle The Covenant they must now battle the Gravemind parasite. Funny enough The Covenant find themselves being attacked the Flood aswell and several Covenant Generals and troops lead by The Arbiter agree to join with the UNSC and Master Chief in a joint effort to stop The Flood but the main reason they join is because they have been made aware that the Forerunners did not choose The Covenant as their “chosen ones” and that their entire religion is a sham. The High Prophets who control The Covenant know this but giving up their grip of power over dozens of star systems is simply out of the question even if a parasitic holocaust is about to unfold. Those that choose to help the UNSC are labeled as heretics and must be destroyed.

One thing I have noticed in the Halo series is something that I have noticed and mentioned before about sci-fi stories. It seems just about everytime a science fiction story that involves the military refers to their military as being a Navy with a fleet of star battleships, cruisers, destroyers etc. The space militaries of the future are always controlled by the Navy and the Office of Naval Intelligence is where top secret operations take place like the Spartan Program that created Master Chief John-117. Now for storytelling purposes I guess this makes sense but in reality any space military that mankind develops will not fall under the control and operation of the Navy at all. All space operations regarding the military will fall under the Air Force and space agencies. They have the expertise, knowledge, and training when dealing with aircrafts, the three dimensional geometries and vacuum of outer space, and of course just what is needed for propulsion and survival. Think about it, who are we going to trust with outer space operations someone who knows about flying, living, and working in outer space or someone that knows how to operate a boat?

Overall, the Halo video game series has a lot to offer any video game fan or anyone who is a fan of science fiction. Halo Encyclopedia: The definitive guide to the Halo Universe offers a very in-depth and comprehensive look at a world that is based on our own universe only about 600 or so years into the future. It features character bios, location bios, weapon bios, and detailed history of events, just the sort of stuff I love to gobble up. Will mankind colonize other planet let alone other star systems? Who knows. Will we find ourselves in a war with a religion crazed alien union? Who knows, but we already got some experience in that don’t we and scary as it sounds we already have quite a bit of experience with deadly diseases and parasites. Will there be a super solider like Master Chief who will save the day? Who knows but if there is he has my support 110% Semper Fi!
